What is a Kidney Cyst?

A kidney cyst may be defined as a rounded, fluid-filled pouch of the kidneys. They are also categorized into simple and complex ones. Simple ones are normally harmless and benign and will not impair the function of the kidney, but complex ones are of an unusual size or are solid and will require further investigation and treatment.

Kidney cysts are small fluid-filled pouches that arise on or in the kidneys. A cystic person is asymptomatic or symptomatic or becomes complicated if their cysts enlarge or become infected.

Types of Kidney Cysts

Kidney cysts are of two broad categories:

Simple Kidney Cysts

They have a transparent liquid inside.

They are round and smooth.

Usually benign, they don’t require treatment unless they exhibit symptoms.

Complex Kidney Cysts

It could be a dense element, a ragged edge, or wall thickening.

Obstruction of kidney tubules: When kidney tubules become blocked, fluid can build up and form cysts.

Dialysis: People undergoing long-term dialysis may develop cysts as a complication.

Infection or injury: Kidney injury or inflammation could be a factor that increases cyst risk.

Kidney cysts can form naturally with age or due to health issues like kidney disease or injury.
