Description
A particle air filter is a device that removes solid particulates from the air, such as dust, pollen, mold, and germs, using fibrous or porous materials. Filters with an adsorbent or catalyst, such as charcoal (carbon), may also remove odors and gaseous pollutants like volatile organic compounds or ozone. Air filters are used in situations where air quality is critical, such as in building ventilation systems and engines.
Foam, pleated paper, or spun fiberglass filter elements are used in some buildings, aircraft, and other man-made environments (e.g., satellites and Space Shuttles). Air ionizers, another method, use fibers or elements with a static electric charge to attract dust particles.
Paper, foam, or cotton filters are commonly used in the air intakes of internal combustion engines and air compressors. Apart from a few niche applications, oil bath filters have fallen out of favor. Due to advancements in the aerodynamics and fluid dynamics of the air-compressor component of gas turbines, air intake filter technology has advanced dramatically in recent years.
