Description
Today, man-made diamonds are created in one of two ways: through an intensive process called HPHT (high-pressure, high-temperature) or CVD (chemical vapor deposition). In either case, carbon atoms—from sources such as peanut oil or natural gas—are exposed to high pressures and temperatures. This causes them to react and form into graphite. The atoms are then rearranged into a crystalline structure by heat treatment, which results in synthetic diamonds that look very similar to their mined counterparts.
